Indian rupee has a symbol now. It is a mix of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R'. It will be the fifth currency in the world to have unique identity. So far US dollar, UK Pound, Japanese Yen and Euro have the unique symbols and now Indian rupee is going to join them.
Today the Indian Cabinet has approved this new symbol which is designed by an IIT post graduate called Uday Kumar.

Minister for Information broadcasting Mrs.Ambika Soni has released the symbol and said it may take around 6 months to adopt the symbol locally in India and around one and half year to two years globally.
what's the point of having a symbol without any increase in the value of our currency? Hope the governments will work towards to that instead of satisfying themselves by having a unique symbol for Indian rupee.
On March 5, 2009 the Indian Government announced a contest to create a symbol for the Rupee. During the Union Budget 2010 Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee mentioned that proposed symbol would reflect and capture the Indian ethos and culture.5 symbols had been short listed and one of them was to be finalized at the Union Cabinet meeting held on 24 June 2010. However on the request of the Finance Minister this decision was deferred, and a new date for the same was not announced.
